John Adams Quincy was born on 1767 in Quincy, Massachusetts. He served as America’s sixth president, from 1825 to 1829. He was the son of President John Adams. Adams was educated in Europe and at Harvard University. In 1817, he was chosen by the President James Monroe as Secretary of State. Adams helps Monroe draft the speech which became known as the Monroe Doctrine, in which Monroe declared that the United States would not interfere in European affairs, but that European nations were not to interfere in American affairs, and that no more Europeans colonies were to be founded in the Americas.
In the presidential election of 1824, there were three candidates, John Adams, Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay. None won a majority, but Clay gave his support to Adams, who became president. When Adams made Clay Secretary of State, he was accused of having bribed Clay.
Adams was defeated in the election of 1829, but next year was elected to the House of Representatives. There, he was an eloquent spokesman against slavery, and succeeded in having the “gag rule” abolished. This had prevented discussion of slavery in the House. In 1848, while speaking against slavery in the house, Adams collapsed and died.
